In Memoriam CLAUDE "FIDDLER" WILLIAMS - 96, unparalleled swing fiddler kept Kansas City's tradition alive. Basie's first recorded guitarist. 1995 CD with Sir Roland Hanna, Earl May, Bill Easley and Joe Ascione, "SwingTime in New York" on Progressive, 2000 "Swingin' the Blues" on Bullseye. Toured Europe and Japan. Founding member of the Statesmen of Jazz. Played for WETA's "In Performance at the White House." Last known active musician to have recorded jazz in the 1920s.


HARRY ALLEN - silky and mellow tenor saxophone style draws on the influences of Al Cohn, Stan Getz, and Lester Young. "The Harry Allen Quartet" CD was beautifully recorded in 2003 at Nola Studios with Joe Cohn, Joel Forbes and Chuck Riggs. This quartet is available. VALERIE CAPERS - pianist, vocalist, composer & educator, leads on piano with astounding combination of power, precision and swing, last CD on Columbia has Wynton Marsalis, Paquito D'Rivera and Mongo Santamaria as guests. Engaging and eloquent clinician with specific programs for any age group.


HOUSTON PERSON - big, warm-toner tenor saxophone, deeply respected and professional leader, musician and producer. On HighNote label; Houston's My Romance hit #1 on Gavin poll as Etta Jones' My Buddy, which Houston produced, won her a Grammy nomination in 1999.


EARL MAY - bass, born in 1927, Mingus' student, 9 years with Billy Taylor. Recorded with Taylor, Dizzy, Coleman Hawkins, Kenny Burrell, George Benson, Ruth Brown & Claude Williams. Tours with Frank Foster, toured Japan as a Statesmen of Jazz.


CARRIE SMITH - singer of gospel- tinged blues, evokes memories of Dinah Washington, Bessie Smith and Mahalia Jackson with her rich contralto vocals.


DAVID "FATHEAD" NEWMAN - multi-reedist known as a great "Texas Tenor" playing immaculate flute & alto saxophone as well.
